Stephen Formosa started practicing Taekwondo at the age of 15 years of age. He was a quick learner due to his innate talent and predisposition for the martial art and achieved 1st Dan black belt in 1996. After the establishment of the Malta Taekwondo Federation (MTF) in 1995, he was entrusted with the opening of the first club by then president and head instructor Master Christopher Vella.

During his career he was amongst the first athletes to represent the MTF in the Senior European Championship and also in the Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE). Since then he held several distinctive positions within the MTF Executive Committee where he headed the MTF for four years. In 2006, Stephen Formosa was the first person to attend a solidarity-coaching course founded by the World Taekwondo and Kyung Hee University in South Korea, who again attended in 2014.

He also holds a Kukkiwon 3rd Class Master Certificate, and in 2017 he successfully completed a five-year degree course in Sports and Active Lifestyles at the University of Malta. In December 2017, he achieved the level of 6th Dan in Taekwondo, putting him at the apex amongst all Taekwondo instructors on the Maltese islands.

Josianne Formosa Dragon Academy Malta
JOSIANNE FORMOSA
TAEKWONDO

Josianne Formosa has started practicing Taekwondo at the age of 19 years and she holds a 2nd Dan Black Belt. She has been involved in the Dragon Academy (Taekwondo Dragon Club at the time) from its inception, almost 22 years ago. She is an instructor, coach and also forms part of the administration team of Dragon Academy.

She served as a Treasurer and a Secretary of the Malta Taekwondo Federation (MTF), during the period in which Master Christopher Vella was the President. During 2016, she was co-opted as President of the MTF and remained in office till January 2017 – Josianne did not seek re-election for this post.

By profession, Josianne is an accountant and is a member of the Malta Institute of Accountants and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. She works as a Senior Manager with the regulator for financial services in Malta.

Emvin Dragon Academy Malta
EMVIN MIFSUD
TAEKWONDO & HAPKIMUDO

Emvin Mifsud initially started training Judo but later swapped to Taekwondo when this martial art was first introduced to the Maltese islands back in 1985. Since 2010 Emvin has been training continuously, attaining 2nd Dan black belt in December 2016 and 3rd Dan Black Belt in June 2019. In 2012, Emvin was one of the first group of students who started Hapkimudo in Malta under the instruction of Master Christopher Vella. In February 2016, Emvin attained 1st Dan in Hapkimudo under the auspices of Grand Master Kang-Jong Lee.

In 2012, Emvin was co-opted as a Public Relations Officer within the Executive Council of the Malta Taekwondo Federation and continued to serve in his post for a total of five years.

Hi is an insurance broker by profession who holds the status of Chartered Member with the Institute of Risk Management, a Fellowship status with the Chartered Insurance Institute and is a Chartered Insurance Risk Manager.

Mauro Dragon Academy Malta
MAURO BUSUTTIL
TAEKWONDO

Mauro Busuttil has been training Taekwondo since 2007 with a special dedication to the sparring and competition side of the sport. He was a member of the Malta Olympic Elite Scheme and had represented Malta on high profile competitions such as the World Championships in Russia (2015) and South Korea (2017). His emphasis on sparring lead him to attend almost monthly foreign training camps during the past 2 years even training under two Olympic Gold medalists, Carlo Molfetta (Italy) and Steven Lopez (USA). In his career, Mauro has been competing and training in various countries such as Italy, Greece, Holland, Cyprus, UK, Korea, Russia, and Germany. He feels a need and satisfaction in sharing such valuable experience and knowledge in the club leading by example the future generations.

Mauro Busuttil holds a bachelor degree in Communications (Hons.) & Psychology as well as two Masters, Business Administration Marketing and MA Integrated Marketing Communication. He is currently working within a law enforcement department under the government of Malta.
