Taekwondo is a martial art system that developed during the last 5000 years of Korean history. It is the national sport of South Korea
but it is very popular around the world with over 70,000,000 practitioners in more than 209 countries. It got its popularity for its
spectacular and complex kicking techniques. It gained even more popularity after a breathtaking demonstration held during the opening
ceremony at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. It was once again a demonstration sport in the Olympic Games held in Barcelona, Spain
1992. In 2000, it was officially recognized as an Olympic sport when the games where held in Sydney, Australia. Nevertheless, Taekwondo
goes far beyond the competitive aspect and a beginner will be introduced to the essential basic stances, defending and striking techniques.
In essence, Taekwondo relies on the explosiveness of its techniques. Moreover, with such techniques come along more important
principles that one should adhere to: Respect, Courtesy and Indomitable Spirit.
